Crystal Feature – Amethyst

The Master Healer

The first crystal I owned (well before becoming a witch) was amethyst.

Amethyst is a type of quartz crystal. It’s popular among metaphysical enthusiasts because it is a master healer—and has a captivating violet hue reminiscent of dusk skies.

The ancient Greeks believed amethyst could keep you from getting drunk. In Greek mythology, one story says Amethyst was a young, virgin woman (mythology loves their virgins) who became the target of Dionysus (god of wine) after he was insulted by a mortal.

In a drunken rage, Dionysus decided to get revenge on mortals by setting a tiger trap for the next human to cross his path…which happened to be Amethyst. Amethyst worshipped Artemis, goddess of the hunt and chastity. When Artemis saw the toil about to befall Amethyst, she rushed to help her. She had to act fast, so she turned Amethyst into quartz crystal, which would protect her against the brutal attack from Dionysus’ tigers.

Seeing this, Dionysus became remorseful and in tears, poured out his red wine over Amethyst, turning her quartz figure purple.

Although amethyst is now known to have no effect on how much you drink, some believe it does have the power to help with addiction, among its many other benefits.

Amethyst is a great crystal to have in your collection, especially if you struggle with anxiety, OCD, or depression.

Physical Benefits

Amethyst is believed to help with headaches and migraines, strengthen the immune system, improve digestive health, and regulate hormones. It is also a good crystal to help improve sleep and is thought to alleviate insomnia.

Spiritual Benefits

You can use amethyst to open your intuition, enhance your psychic abilities, and activate your spiritual awareness. It’s a great tool to use while meditating because it opens the third eye. It can also increase focus and enhance memory.

Emotional & Mental Wellness

Amethyst is a very calming crystal. It is one of my favourite crystals because I can use it as a mental wellness aid. It helps with soothing anxiety, settling overactive, scattered minds, and relieving stress. It can help you reach a feeling of tranquillity.

Amethyst absorbs negative energy, which is why it’s especially important to cleanse your amethyst crystal after use.

Since it absorbs negativity, amethyst also helps protect you.

How to Cleanse Your Amethyst Crystal

Quartz in general is a harder crystal and can withstand many cleansing methods.

Amethyst is water-safe, so one way you can cleanse it is by holding it under running water.

You can also bury this crystal in a bowl of dirt or salt overnight, which is a powerful cleanser.

Burning a candle or incense and passing amethyst through the smoke is another way to cleanse.

Lastly, you can use sound to cleanse your amethyst (and any other crystal). Using a tuning fork, digital tuner, song-bowl (you can find song bowl tracks on YouTube and they are VERY soothing), or a song that makes you feel some good energy, play the sound near your amethyst crystal to cleanse it of any negativity.

How You Can Use Amethyst Crystal

  • Carry an amethyst crystal with you in your bag or pocket
  • Wear a piece of amethyst jewelry
  • Place an amethyst crystal or geode somewhere in your home
  • Hold onto an amethyst crystal while mediating or manifesting
  • Use amethyst in spell work (anti-anxiety spells, banishing negativity, healing, sleep/dream spells)

The next time you feel any gross anxiety creeping up, grab some amethyst and keep it close by!
